June OS/2 Shareware

In keeping with this month's financial software theme, we look at some of the software available to help you balance the books.

Before you install a shareware program that you have downloaded from the Net, you should always check the version information. You could be downloading an old version with limited features, or even an experimental one that could crash your workstation. Generally, the first release version is 1.00 — there may be versions before this one, but they are usually 'under construction' versions. When the author makes a minor improvement, the version number is incremented (for example: 1.00 becomes 1.01). But when a major change occurs (a lot of extra functionality, or a new PM interface, for example) the version number increments to the next whole integer (for example: 1.54 becomes 2.00). A word of warning: if the version code ends with either a or b — beware! Alpha versions (for example, 1.32a) have undergone little testing at all, and beta versions (for example, 2.46b) have been tested at a base level, but have usually been released for others to test. If an alpha or beta release falls over and you lose data, or even suffer hardware damage, you have used the program at your own risk!

Electronic Teller 3.13
Electronic Teller is a fully featured home finance application. There isn't that much that it can't do -- there is a wide assortment of reports (for example, budget and transaction) with an easy-to-use variety of sub-totalling options.

If you find pictures and plots easier to absorb than columns of figures, you can view budget tracking and other graphs. Various categories can be monitored; for example, you can keep an eye on what the financial institutions are doing with your money by keeping tabs on transaction fees or service charges.

For those who have a financial mind not unlike my own, a reminder utility can be used for upcoming fiscal and/or social events with limited or perpetual repetition options.

Electronic Teller includes very useful international currency support, including conversion to and from a foreign domestic currency. International support is pushed a little further by the inclusion of language support in French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, UK and US English. The author is on the lookout for translators for other languages.

If there's more than one person in your house that looks after money there is multiple-user support to shield accounts from one another. There's also a calculator in case you don't like the one bundled with OS/2, and probably one of the best features of Electronic Teller is its ability to import and export QIF files. Oh, and there's a configurable cheque printer that supports user-defined designs and multiple cheque-per-page printing, if you're interested.

Overall, Electronic Teller is good, but only suited to home use, not SOHO.

CHECK+ 2.1
Pronounced "Check Plus", this neat little application is an OS/2 financial management program for the home and small business. This version is a shareware demonstration program, a full working edition except that it only allows a total of 50 transactions across all accounts. The author has conveniently added some sample financial data to help you get on the right track. The only way to learn how to use this one is to play with it!

BanK 1.1.0b
I've mentioned BanK before, but this new version is much better. A word of warning though, this particular edition is a beta program -- it has been released to the public for fault finding, and is by no means considered the final release. This means that the author indemnifies himself from any harm that may come to your workstation due to the use of it -- you have been warned!

Money Tree 1.0b
Another beta, but Money Tree has been very well thought out and written. There is full WPS integration: simply use drag and drop to create new ledgers, reports and so on. Although aimed squarely at the US market, Money Tree is appropriate for use in Australia, but you may find a function or two that you will never use. You can create account ledgers for cheques, cash, savings, loan and credit accounts, and all ledgers support reconciliation, transfers between accounts, split transactions. . . the list goes on!

There are calculator and calendar functions, filtering of categories based on transaction type plus a printed cheque facility. For those complicated folk, you can create as many ledgers as you need and put them wherever you want. A very powerful feature is the sophisticated query and report module -- you can define custom queries using point and click selections, cash flow to review your income and expenses, net worth to analyse your assets and liabilities and, of course, the ability to display or print results in tabular or graphical form.

One of the sections of Money Tree that really shines is the easy to use budgeting -- you can even automatically budget based on previous financial history. Budgeting periods exist in weekly, bi-weekly, two month, monthly and yearly displays, and may be printed as tables or graphs. As with other financial programs, you can import from Quicken QIF files, and you can have an unlimited number of Money Tree objects of any type (depending on your hardware).

PM$tock
PM$tock, as the name suggests, is a Presentation Manager stock analyser. Basically, you download stock quotes (either manually or automatically) through your Net connection, from the Prodigy site. Then you can chart stocks with limited technical analysis, and, if you like, print your chart.

If you're not happy about the default layout, or how PM$tock works, all you need to do is email PM Plus, and they will write a new version for you (how's that for service?). Just email them a detailed letter describing all of the changes you are interested in, and a customisation fee will be based on the extent of the modifications required so it performs as you describe. Depending on the changes requested, it usually takes PMPlus six to eight weeks to deliver a custom version. A great idea!

PM$tock will look great on your desktop.
